Analyse the cover for how media language has been used to create different meanings.
Mention:
-Main Image
-Anchorage
-Cover Lines
-Layout
Vogue magazine shows the audience their different ways to portray media language on their cover.
Firstly, the main image shows Malala Yousafzai in the middle of the cover, direct address as been used to punctuate her importance for the cover and the mid close-up shot highlights her facial expression, features and language; it ultimately represents her as gentle and calm. The close up shot also shows the audience her outfit, consisting of a red shirt and a matching hijab, these features show the importance of her religion and what it means to Malala. If the shot was a close up, the audience wouldn't fully grasp the purpose of her faith, Malala known worldwide as a female education activist, based in the muslim religion. The red background and outfit connotes to power, courage and bravery, much like Malala herself.
Secondly, the main cover line reads 'The extraordinary life of Malala,' this attracts the audience to read the magazine because of the white text which stands out against the red background. Vogue's use of the words ,'survivor, activist,' and 'legend' highlights their respect and recognition towards Malala and her achievements after being attacked by the Taliban, after fighting for women's right to an education in the middle east and still being a worldwide legend and role model. Malala's name is written in a larger font size to the other cover lines, this is because Vogue is showing her importance amongst everything else. In addition to this, the anchorage text underneath and above her name are in italics, to emphasise her achievements and ethics.
Lastly, the layout is a typical 'Z' shape, this specific layout is used to emphasise important cover lines, most people are custom to reading left to right, which is why the layout has cover lines in that direction. In addition, Malala's hand guides the audience towards her eyes, again highlighting the direct address.

Representation
In the past, Muslims have been represented as evil and benevolent characters with no romantic interests; they are usually not for comedic relief and are mostly portrayed as terrorists and anarchists.
In terms of ethnicity, the Vogue cover shows their further progression into using more diverse and challenged stereotypes. Furthermore, Vogue portray gender stereotypes by highlighting women's' interest on their cover lines as stereotypical yet positive; some of the cover lines, describe 'fight talk' which is very uncharacteristic for a women's fashion and lifestyle magazine .
Explain how both ethnicity and gender have been represented on the vogue cover:
In terms of ethnicity, the Vogue cover highlights their own progression in using more diverse models and challenging stereotypes. Their portrayal of Malala Yousafzai shows this because of her being an Islamic Muslim woman. By being the star of this cover , Malala challenges the convention of using an attractive, young, white woman for fashion magazines. Furthermore, Vogue mentions two celebrities on their cover lines, Anthony Joshua and Jourdan Dunn; both of these stars are people of colour, which also shows how Vogue broadened their progression of stereotypes.
Gender is represented in an anti-stereotypical way by using cover lines such as 'Fighting Talk'. Being a women's fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue usually connects their cover lines to more feminine and delicate topics; using this challenges theses ways and portrays a more anti stereotypical and tells the readers that the main cover star is a powerful and courageous woman. Also, the 'Fighting Talk' cover line suggests that the women mentioned are challenging a sport centred around masculinity.
However, in this cover line, gender is also represented in a stereotypical way. The cover lines 'love after lockdown' and 'Vogues guide to summer beauty' portray a classic, feminine portrayal. This highlights the stereotype that women are obsessed with beauty and aesthetics.

Do Now:
1)Similarities and differences ✓
2)Describe if you agree or disagree ✓
3)5 ✓ or 4
4)Either the GQ or Vogue cover (something we've already studied)
5)Gender and Ethnicity Media language or representation.
- Both portray the stars are powerful and independent.
- Both cover stars are not stereotypical models (eg; Malala is a muslim woman and Kim is Armenian -American.)
Differences:
-Kim is shown in a more revealing outfit than Malala.
-Medium close up vs a long shot.
-Malala is shown as more caring and soft whereas Kim is portrayed for the male gaze.
-The cover lines on Kim's cover are more stereotypical; about makeup, fashion and self-help, whereas Malala's cover lines talk more about anti-stereotypical topics.
In the covers shown, gender representation has more overall differences than similarities.
These individual covers showcase different representations of women, for example, in the Vogue cover, Malala Yousafzai is portrayed as more caring, soft and comforting. She is shown in a medium close up shot highlighting her calm facial expression and her hand is lightly upon her face; almost quietly leading the audience into her eyes. Her sophisticated outfit paints a different picture than the other cover, in which: Kim Kardashian is represented as more confident and appealing to the male gaze. She is shown to be wearing a more revealing outfit than Malala, which allows her to be seen as almost scandalous yet empowered, this is shown to the audience through the long shot, which reveals most of Kim's body which matches the conventions of most women's magazines where women are typically sexualised.
Furthermore, In the Elle cover, the cover lines help the audience visualise a more stereotypical and cliché approach, describing mostly fashion and self- help cover lines. Elle allows the audience to see Kim as a more powerful by highlighting the word "Confidence". However, Malala's cover describes her as a 'survivor, activist' and 'legend'; this further shows Vogue's love and support towards Malala. The cover lines on the Vogue cover are anti-stereotypical; by describing 'fighting talk' Vogue is challenging stereotypes, along with marketing a topic not stereotypically situated with the target audience.
Yet again, another difference from the two cover is brought together by the colour palettes and how they further describe the women. Malala's background and hijab being the same colour of bright red, not only symbolises courage, love and bravery; but also it draws the audience towards her face yet again.
Her name is in a white, sans serif font that stands out behind the grey and black cover lines. Kim's cover however; her name in a stereotypical pink colour, which is usually associated with females, the white helps the cover lines stand out. Also, Kim's name is highlighted in the same colour as 'confidence'; this shows that Elle connects Kim's name to confident and influential. Which also hints to what Elle's target audience is and how they portray women for their readers.
Although some differences are shown within these covers; they also have some similarities. For instance, both stars are shown as powerful and independent. In the 'Elle' cover; Kim Kardashian is shown in a full face of makeup, with wild hair and a revealing outfit; Elle's portrayal of this calls further attention to how influential and overpowering yet cliché Kim is as a celebrity. Malala Yousafzai is illustrated as covered up yet still visibly confident and powerful. Not only does Malala's enlightened and sophisticated look portray women as enriched and self-assured, Malala is described as a 'survivor, activist' and 'legend', her being an anti-stereotypical woman on a cover that uses mostly stereotypical female models. This links to Vogues morals and how they famously present women as powerful and independent.

Add more information and detail about the cover [3/5]
The vogue magazine communicates meaning by highlighting the unstereeotypical feminine power from Malala Yousafzai and her importance, independence and power as a cover star. She is portrayed as incredibly unstereeotypical compared to 'normal' cover stars; she is shown with her hijab, a symbol of her muslim faith. The colours of her hijab and outfit (red), could indicate a strong sense of courage, power and love, also the colours merge together beautifully, allowing the audience a clear view of her face. Along with her hand, almost leading the audiences view onto her feminine features.
Question 2a: [2/5]
Social context influences magazines because they can alter the cover to be more relevant and trendy to the times. During 2021, not only were the US troops leaving Afghanistan causing Malala to bring herself on live TV and news channels to fight for afghan women's rights; but the dramatic rise in Covid-19 cases across the world led to national lockdown. By having Malala on this cover, they are bringing awareness and to gain audiences across the world; by appealing to certain audiences by reviewing relevant topics.
