What Is Representation?

Lo: To explore the concept of representation & stereotypes.

Representation is the certain way something is portrayed by someone/something. (usually in media)

Positive representations of teenagers in media.

These are examples of teens in media that i think are represented properly and positively. Shows such as Netflix's Sex Education and Derry Girls are examples of older teens in England. Whereas shows such as Stranger Things, Wednesday and Gilmore Girls represent teens in America.

A stereotype is a generalised representation of a person, place or thing.

How Do You Compare Representations?

LO:To write and structure an effective exam style question.

-List similarities and differences.
-Use list to make judgement
-introduction (⬆)
-Use 25 mark structure to write essay/make sure i include judgement.

Similarities:
-un stereotypical representations of gender
-un stereotypical topics as cover lines.
-Both have minor/major sexualisation.

Differences:
-Sexualisation of the woman.
-Women portrayed negatively as Medusa.

The representation of gender in the two magazines is portrayed as not stereotypical, the two star vehicles are shown non-stereotypically but showing contrast to their stereotypes. Tom Daley, is shown wearing bright colours with a happy expression, along with the pink masthead colour, these are representations of stereotypical women. Rihanna, is shown with dull colours and evil connotations, due to her being portrayed as Medusa, this shows her as not modelling as a stereotypical woman. The QC magazine is more commonly used to using male stars as their models, and focuses on less sexual and relationship involved cover lines and stories, unlike cosmopolitan.

Case Study 1: Raheem Sterling GQ

LO: To explore the context & layout design for GQ magazine.

GQ, (according to people), has a history of objectifying women in its magazine, which shows/promotes a chauvinist attitude towards women.
During the early 1990s, GQ pivoted from a near only men magazine to becoming more inclusive towards women, however the female models wear shot near naked or fully nude.
Present day GQ magazines frequently depict dramatised and dramatically different from the men.

GQ targets its audience, (conservative, 20-45 year old men), by promoting nearly naked, sexualised female celebrity models on the cover.

GQ represents gender by portraying women as sexualised and objectified, whereas  men are depicted as professional and powerful.

Typography: How the text looks.

The text is a thin white san serif font, however, some of the more important and larger text uses a thicker serif font. Some of the text is a accent colour with a creamy brown colour. The main masthead is a sans serif font in block capitals, this connotes to masculinity and power.

Colour palette :
The colour palette is grey, black and white with accents of khaki and slight yellow. The black and white connotes to sophistication and power whereas the pop of yellow in the sunglasses shows a hit of fun and unstereeotypical for a serious expression and palette.

Layout:
The masthead always goes to the top right corner because in the UK, most people read from left to right.
At the bottom right, there is usually a protect placement because its the last thing we see when looking through the cover lines.

Anchorage Text:
Text that gives you the meaning of the image/ to help interpret the image. (eg. "Rock 'n' Roll Star: 72 extraordinary hours with Liam Gallagher", " Rock and Roll star" is an Oasis song, which. Liam Gallagher is the lead singer of.
