Film Poster Introduction

LO: To explore the aims and conventions of film posters.

1) The Big 5 Hollywood studios are Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures.

2)The main aim of a film marketing campaign is to connect to audiences and get them interested enough to watch the movie.

3) Creating trailers and teasers, posters, advertisements etc are all examples of effective marketing campaigns within the film industry.

4) A film poster needs to have, the title, the actor names, the release date, credit block, director and main image.

5)A teaser trailer shows limited information , whereas a theatrical poster includes loads of information about the upcoming film.

6) A recent movie franchise would be the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The main image features the '007' logo behind the title '007' , which is prominent and iconic to the franchise as it followed the series from its debut in 1962. Daniel Craig, James Bond is the main character on the poster, symbolising his significance to the series as the main protagonist. Also, women are in more revealing clothing than the men, which suggest sexualised theme.A cold blue colouring alludes to heroism and stoicism, and the fade to a harsh orange colour link to the calm and collective life of James Bond can fade quickly into the explosive life of Bond. Furthermore, the text is in a bold font, highlighted in white to show it's importance to the genre, the iconic '007' logo is present, identifying the recognisable franchise along with the credit block which only reads '007', which shows how the fame of the character spans over 60+ years over the fame of the actors in the movie. The genre is action based on the mise-en-scene of the film, which is that the actors and actresses are dressed in sophisticated and smart clothing, in terms of facial expression, the characters display stoic and serious features ; setting of the poster dictates a serious and action-packed movie, from the mountains, car chases and neon-lit buildings. The release date is the 2nd of April, it was delayed for a year and half due to covid restrictions.

Film poster and representation

Lo: To analyse the film poster for key representations.

1) Stoic, attractive, sophisticated, skilled, rich, stealthy, wearing formal attire, 25-40, serious.

The images used in the 2021 'No Time To Die' poster ultimately highlight the importance and relevance of James Bond. Bond himself is presented as a silhouette, the largest photo on the cover; the use of enlarging his portrait tells the audience his importance as the main protagonist in the franchise. The remaining characters are pictured within his silhouette and his stoic expression portrays an aspect of control and power among the characters. His sophisticated and formal suit links to a amplitude in power as he is ultimately presented as powerful and important within the franchise itself. The images highlight bond's importance as he is depicted 3 times overall on the poster, the repetitive usage of Bond relays his outermost formality and status.

1)French psychiatrist (Léa Seydoux), Dr. Madeline Swann is pictured twice on the poster.
2)Nomi being temporarily reassigned as Bond created immense backlash to the actress online , however she broke stereotypes in the franchise for being the first black woman, (female bond and black bond) in the franchise.

Stereotypes:
The action-packed genre is linked with masculinity and male domination, Bond being the biggest silhouette embraces this further.

Gender:
The males are presented as serious and stoic; wearing suits and formal attire with little to no emotion or expression, the lack of emotion links directly to the stereotype that men aren't emotional nor expressive. The females are portrayed as empowered and varied in their depictions; for example their races, personality and link to the storyline.

Age:
Bond is depicted as the oldest, his elder control and power also links to his calm and collected behaviour. however, youth is ultimately presented as not as important to the storyline and almost living in Bond's metaphorical shadow, the younger generation (the other characters) are controlled by Bond  and his actions within the film.

Sexuality:
Not many indications of sexuality,  here are heterosexual stereotypes within the women's outfits and underlying look. However sexuality overall is enforced.

Race:
Nomi being a non-sexualised British - Jamaican woman who is presented as powerful and important. Beyond the poster, characters such as Paloma, Madeleine and Safin are non- white british/american characters; however audiences wouldn't know this information without watching the film entirely.

Do Now:
1)Stoic, masculine, sophisticated
2)Independent , capable, sexualised
3) Nomi- strong, determined, (mainly white ethnic backgrounds).
4) Older- wiser, in- control, calm, stoic.
5)Propps' theory

"The Man With The Golden Gun": Film poster and Media language analysis.

To analyse the film poster for key elements of Media Language.

Women being sexualised and treated badly, men being seen as wealthy, sophisticated and superior. Racism, homophobia etc. Lack of diversity, racial minorities seen as less important, along with women.

-Created with an estimated $7 million budget and grossed $97 million in box office.
-The poster is an illustration, due to the lack of technology and graphics in the 1970s.
-Based on Ian Flemings' books, produced by EON.
-Filmed predominantly in Asia.

-Different love interests?
-Array of stunts and action/ less than modern films.
-Women are portrayed sexually and in bikinis
-Minorities used as servants or comic relief

1) They have used a montage of images to display the action, characters and plot of the movie in one picture.

2) Bond's gun is sophisticated and technological, advanced for 1974- to tie into his 'spy' background. His costume is a plain black suit which shows the audience his wealth and prosperity, his facial expression being stoic and calm with direct eye contact with the audience links to direct address within the poster.

3)The golden gun is a sign of wealth, superiority and advance; the person holding it is a male, judging by the hands. The masculine hand expresses the internalised misogyny the franchise had by not including women as the main protagonist/ antagonist in the movie. The gun is also aimed at Bond , to show his importance and how the gun probably belongs to a villain or antagonist.

4)Who owns the Golden Gun? , does James Bond win?

5)The action/adventure codes included are the depictions of explosions, weaponry, stunts and fighting. These codes co-inside with scenes from the trailer-such as the car bridge jump and the kung-fu battle.

Propp Characters:

-Hero- James Bond
-Villain- Unnamed/unseen owner of the Golden Gun
-Donor- N/A
-Princess- high probability of the two women being the 'princess' characters.
-Princess's Father- N/A

The film poster uses images to create meaning through the characterisation of images , specifically Bond. This can be seen in the image because Bond's direct photo being highlighted as larger and more dominant over the other characters, this links to his sophistication and control over the other characters shown the shoot. His photo being the biggest gives the impression that Bond is the main character, to an audience that aren't familiar to the franchise, this can compel and encourage them to watch the film. Additionally, Bond's presence over the other characters indicates his power and control as the oldest and his role as the 'hero'.
